Nothing tragic please...What is the saddest thing you have seen or heard about associated with Valentines Day?

Years ago, my wife and I would celebrate with a dinner out, and then champagne and "marital priveledges" at the local "hot tub" hotel.

I would always check in early and go make sure the room was clean(I always re-clean a hot tub and flush the jets with bleach).

While I was checking in there was a young lady who was checking in and she was just over-flowing with giggly smiles. I watched as she went through a similar routine to my own. She brought in flowers and wine and food, followed by a beautiful nightgown on a hanger. I smiled thinking that she was maybe looking foward to being engaged that night. Fast-foward a few hours, my wife and I are pulling in front of our room...rushing out of the door of the is the young women, tears streaming down her face, wearing her nightgown..she jumped in her car and drove off. We looked in the room..it was all set-up for a big romantic night except for the phone which had been torn out of the wall. I always wondered what had happened.

The saddest thing I've heard, was someone's mom dying on valentines day. It was sooo sad.

maybe she was fooling around with some sleaze bag and he never showed up. what do you care what she was doing. shutup and myob (mind your own business) stop being so noisy.

Ten worst gifts to buy a woman?

1. Never give a woman any kind of household appliance or something that is going to make "housework" easier. For instance, a blender, a toaster, a new vacuum, one of those mops they advertise on tv that does everything but suck the life out of you, anything in a informercial. The only wise choice is a new washing machine with a turbo spin cycle. (Makes laundry day go by pretty fast when you can at least sit on it during spin-dry and end up smiling the rest of the day.)

2. Any bulk cleaning supplies, "honey, I got you that large box of Tide you have been wanting." "This Windex should last you a while." "I got a good deal on the industrial strength toilet bowl cleaner." All I can say is, be prepared to run. I have faith that if you would have at least stopped and thought about what would be a much more intimate gift, you would have had the sense to spring for the $5 Chia Pet you were eyeing in Kmart.

3. Any sharp objects made by Ronco which slices or dices, or a set of ginsu knives. These may one day be used as a weapon against you when you come home with lipstick on your collar after a "night out with the boys."

4. Do not buy gifts for yourself and pretend they are for her. "Honey, I'm sure you'll get a lot of use out of the new drill I bought you." By then she will have put it to good use by drilling a quarter inch hole into the side of your skull for even thinking she would accept such a lame gift. After a gift like this, you probably won't be around for NEXT Christmas.

5. Any lingerie made of flannel, such as a pair of feet pajamas with a trap door in back. A Little Mermaid or Barney cartoon character nightgown. It gives her the idea that you do not consider her the sexy woman that she is. Take out that wallet and buy her something sexy from Victoria Secret (just like you did for your mistress or other girlfriend).

6. No name perfume which costs you $1.99, such as Eu de Toilet, which actually smells like the bathroom, moldy fruit, or your dirty socks. If you are going to buy her perfume, spring for the brand names.

7. Any type of cubic zirconia jewelry you see on the Home Shopping Network. It will be quite embarrassing when she is showing off that fabulous diamond to her friends and tries to cut glass with it. (We actually test them you know.) Also, now would not be a good time to buy her that set of diamond nipple clamps you always wanted to, you know how we like to show off our jewelry and it could get embarrassing at the New Year's party when she decides to show them off to your buddies.

8. Please do not buy her clothes because you think for one minute you have good taste in woman's clothing. Well, perhaps you might if you are a transvestite, but all in all, believe me, she'll smile and say its beautiful while choking back tears and mumbling under her breath, "were the hell would I ever wear this outfit without being arrested for bad taste?" An additional hint, plaids do not go with stripes (even though you think your golfing outfit looks just fine). Its a known fact to the rest of the world that that is a taboo. In the Northeast, thats like wearing white after Labor Day.

9. Do not give her a gift certificate to Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. Most men would know better, especially the ones who have learned the correct response to "do these pants make me look fat." If you are one of the poor souls who still doesn't get it and purchased a gift like this, be prepared for the silent treatment for a month. (Although that may be something you would actually look forward to.) A better alternative would be hiring a Chippendale dancer as a personal trainer to get her motivated into getting fit.

10. Last but not least, never buy a woman anti-wrinkle cream, or a book on "How not to be Nasty Sunday through Saturday." These are not considered gifts, they are considered reasons for seriously injuring the person who bought it and just may stand up in court of law.

i always used to do the point no. 6, now i know how wrong i was next time i will take care, LOL

Excellent,like your style!!!

lol very very funny

All excellent. Now if the men would only read it and learn.

hehe

Hell hast no wrath like a womens fury.

Too Long Babe...these things don't stick in your mind like the others.

not bad!

I wouldn't mind getting a drill as a gift. I love power tools!

Guys will never get the whole gift thing. You'll tell him to lose weight, and then complain that you think you're fat. Then if he gives you a Jenny Craig coupon, you go ballistic.

We're idiots. Can we just give you money? Can you just tell us what to buy?

i agree with u

those are so cool

Very smart ideas, I am passing this list to my husband at once. :O)

Creation of a new wardrobe--Part II?

Back story again: Haven't been sufficiently shopping in years, lost weight, need to be able to find to right pieces to create coordinating outfits.

Before you answer any of this, keep in mind that my intended style is supposed to be an everyday version of Old Hollywood glamour (if that affects your choices of items).

Outerwear: At least in the fall, should a girl have any coats? If so, how many, and of what type?

Pajamas: How many sets of pajamas should a girl bring to school, and is it OK if one of them is a nightgown?

Gym clothes: How many sets should I have?

Bras: How many bras should a woman have? What type and color?

Hosiery: What color looks best on a pale person? I usually use ivory in non-professional settings and off-black in professional settings.

Accessories: I don't wear jewelry often, but I'd like to. How many each of necklaces, bracelets, watches, and pairs of earrings should I have? What types should they be?

Shoes: How many pairs of shoes should I have, and of what types? I'm aware that I should have one pair of running sneakers and one pair of casual sneakers, and that many of the other shoes will be black. What else should I buy?

okay. wow.

Yes, have 2-3 coats.

pajamas; wear whatever is comfortable unless you are with a guy.

gym clothes; how often do you go to the gym? 1-2

bras; 5+

hosiery: idk

accessories; just buy them as you see and like them

shoes; same as accessories.

It's my B-day and I didn't get anything I wanted?

Today is my B-day and I got a couple presents but nothing i wanted. I got underwear, A REALLY ugly nightgown, a book ( I HATE THE SERIES, And i asked for a diff book.) and a bracelet set. (WTF?!?) Why didn't they get me what i wanted? PS i didn't want ANTHING I wanted. And the things i wanted weren't expensive...

It's sad when people give you gifts you don't like, because it feels like they haven't really bothered to know you well enough to know what you would want. Maybe you can exchange the book for the one you want? If it is a new book, the store should allow this even without the receipt.

I don't know why they didn't get you what you wanted, but it probably was not on purpose. At least they got you some things, so they were trying to make some effort. Maybe they didn't know what you wanted. It can be really hard to figure out what to get as a gift for some people, even though they think it should be obvious. I'm sure you have had trouble figuring out what to get for someone before, and may not have always picked the right thing. Just try to be gracious and appreciate the thought.

Happy Birthday, anyway.

Have you thought about the gifts and the spirit they were given. I have always taught my kids that whatever they are given they should be thankful. Maybe the givers didn't have a lot of extra cash and they thought they were giving you something that you needed, not just what you wanted. Maybe in passing you could thank them and at the same time ask them what made them think of you when they picking out your gift, you might be surprised behind the meaning of the gifts.

Does it really matter what you get. Just be thankful and happy that your friends and family remebered and you're lucky enough to live to be able to spend another birthday with them. Learn to enjoy the simple things in life. When you die you can't take those materiallistic things with you but your memories will live on forever. :O) Cherish every moment with your family and friends don't sweat the petty stuff. :O)

You should be thankful for what you get . some kids get nothing. You sound like no matter what it would have been it would of not been the right thing. Thank god you are here and some one thought about you. alot of kids would of love it.

I don't understand you say "I didn't want ANYTHING I wanted" what do you mean? I guess I was raised to appreciate the things I receive.

Is your name Paris Hilton? Geeze you're spoiled aren't you. If you were my child with that attitude I wouldn't get you anything for your birthdays at all.

happy birthday Ms. I'm not grateful for anything that anyone gets me!

Be grateful, it could be worse...

You sound like the biggest brat ever. Thank God you're not my kid!!!

The first or the sixth one.

I pick numbers 6 and 8. They are pretty and practical.

I think it is so cool to have men wear pretty nighties to bed. I make my husband do that because I like to feel the soft tricot nylon against his lean hard body. Sexy! And it practical too. Sometimes I wake up at night and my hormones are on fire. If he's wearing pajamas then by the time I've wrestled them off, I just won't be in the mood anymore. When he's wearing nighties I can easily stroke his peep to attention, and then with a quick flip, I get easy access to release my passion.

Look in e-bay for Olga gowns with a wide sweep. They are so beautiful. I also recommend that you wear a full slip under your nightie. It creates a more sensual feel. Good luck and enjoy,

I like the last one. I don't know what kind of body you have to wear it in but to me it looks hott and comfy and shows alot but covers alot. I dunno how to explain it. I love silk material. Keeps me warm at night.

wana know wats all in fashion now a days n wana be trendy n different

I think 1 is a real sexy nightgown but if it were up to me id buy 6 becuase it will be comforatable and looks nice. I want it now. Lol but yeah #6. :D

i think the second one or the 6th one are really cute and they look really comfortable.

Valentines day B.S.?

Im so tired of people asking what they should get there loved ones. Well ummm its YOUR gf/bf you should know them by now. As for geting them a movie. If my boyfriend got me a movie for valentines day I would be disapointed. I expect something romantic and sweet. Like jewerly, a card, nightgowns, lotion set. Stuff that is really involes valentines day. Idk I just wanted to see if anyone agrees..

My wife and I don't celebrate Valentines Day. We are both in agreement that it is a holiday dreamed up by Hallmark and Russell Stover.

Yes..

Yeah I agree. I don't have a girlfriend currently. However, if I did I would undoubtedley take her out for a romantic dinner and/or a movie. The evenings events would be situation/interest specific to the girl that I am dating at the time. Of course flowers and chocolates are a must. The way I look at it is, you can't be cheap on someone you care about. You gotta spend money on things that are of importance to you.

What should my mom get for my Grandma?

We're going to my Grandma's house in a couple weeks, and my mom realized that she's forgotten to buy her birthday present. It's her mother-in-law, and she's old, like 80. She's been sick for the past few weeks and in and out of the hospital. She already has plenty of nightgowns, spa sets, foot massagers, and cookbooks. Not to mention clothes, purses, and jewelry. She doesn't have any distinct hobbies but is somewhat redneck-inclined (as in singing fish and garage sales). We don't have enough time to put together anything meaningful like scrapbooks. Any ideas?

I've got elderly relatives -- here are some that I've scored with:

Does she have a pet? Then it's easy. More toys, bed, water fountain, brushes, scratchers, bowls, treats, and so forth.

A telephone with GIANT numbers and/or adjustable volume that she can crank to deafening levels.

A CD (and if necessary a CD player) of music from the 40s or 50s that she probably once owned on vinyl but did not later replace with a CD version.

A phonograph. My parents had a vast collection of vinyl, but had long since discarded their record player. I bought 'em a new one (that also had a CD player built in).

A wall clock with giant numbers.

An easy-to-set alarm clock with giant numbers and an alarm loud enough to wake the dead.

Lottery tickets (scratchers) and a lucky penny.

My parents loved the "For Better or Worse" comic strip. I bought some of the books for them. Your grandma also might like some of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

get her a nice basket of hand soaps, lotions, etc. from BATH & BODY WORKS.

What about a family photo? My mother loves pictures. Also Mom likes to work the word search puzzles. I have got her several with some pens, add a few other things she likes, maybe perfume and lotions. Sometimes simple is better.

get her a gift card from her favorite store, and then take her there.that way she can pick out what she wants

My mom is having debilitating hot flashes...she needs help?

My mom turns 50 this year. She is waking up at night with hot flashes....textbook she calls them. Soaking her nightgown with set...getting feverish....then it comes down ith chills and she is freezing. They make her get headaches and nausea from another planet! She has no prescription drug coverage, and I told her that hormone replacement therapy wasn't a great option anyway because her mom had breast cancer....and over time HRT can lead/may cause cancer in women. Are there any over the counter herbs or products she could try? She is a great mother and an even better grandma to my son. We have another grandbaby on the way and she is getting depressed because it is really hindering her life. She is embarrassed and out of options. THANK YOU!

i was watchin oprah yesterday and they were talking about women hormones and menapause problems like hot flashes and etc.. tell her to go to oprah.com and she can probably find help there.

I have read your story. I would like you to visit the following website www.freewebs.com/sunflowerhealthorg maybe you will find the help you need.

Looking for a particular historic romance?

A few years ago my mom, aunt & I read a historic romance that we loved. It was so funny and hot. Unfortunately, in our "idiocy" we didn't keep the book or remember the title or author. All I can specifially remember about the book is it was set mainly on the ocean and instead of cussing they said "God's balls" and "God's nightgown". If anyone can point me in the right direction to find this book or tell me the author or title it would sooo appreciated. Thank you.

If no one comes up with the correct answer here, post your query to 'Romantic Times' magazine. They have a column made especially for your type of question. Good luck.

Try Diana Gabaldon. she writes funny historical romance novels.

The Outlander series historical, bodice ripping pleasure.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question. But I can assure you the "Outlander" saga does not primarily take place on the ocean and I can not recall a single character ever saying "God's nightgown."

When Jamie Fraser cusses, he uses big boy words. And his wife, Claire, swears like a sailor.

They're a fantastic series of books, and I'd recommend them to anyone who can handle adult content, but I don't think they're the series you're looking for.

Where can I get some really nice pajamas for my teenage daughters?

I asked a question about what their rooms (which I have permission from them to design for a birthday present) and I thought it would be a great idea to get them each a new set of pajamas to fold on their beds! I kind of want to get nightgowns, but it doesn't matter. What is a good store to buy pajamas at for teenagers?

Is it appropriate to give a bride lingerie at her shower?

I wouldn't give anything tacky, like crotchless panties of course. But what about a cute cami and short set, or a silky nightgown?

silky nightgown or robe would be nice. a good way to know if it's appropriate would be if she would be comfortable wearing it in front of house guests. you can find a sexy silky cami or robe to wear over something even sexier (that you would not buy of course.)

No. This is something she ought to pick out for herself. She knows her/his tastes far better than you. Stick to something a little safer.

yeah she'll get a kick out of it lol

If you have any respect for the groom---YESSS!!!--give her lingerie.

I think you're on the right mindset.

Sure! Especially if there is no 'theme' for the shower. The cami and short set would be really nice, she could use them as pajamas or just as lounge wear.

Yes. It's okay.

it depends on how close you are to the person,if you are a friend,it's o.k.if you are an acquaintance, then no.

It depends on the group of people, I suppose. I find that most Bridal Showers are more tame - gifts that are for the bride and groom, or very tame.

The bachelorette party is a great place for lingerie and romantic gifts.

My rule is - if the bride's mother is going to be at the shower, then give something nice.

If you help her try it on

hell yeah its perfectly appropriate i mean i dont care its coming off any ways

I've seen it done many times.

I have a real conservative Christian family and I was surprised to get tons of lingerie, lube, massage oils from alot of my seemingly uber-religious relatives. For a bridal shower, it's totally appropriate. It's pretty much expected (and appreciated :), but I never would've expected it from them. My friend who's catholic also got tons of naughty swag from her conservative friends & relatives, so personally I'd say it's safe to give lingerie at a bridal shower.

There was a line in a movie.."stella, that nightgown is very flammable" what is the movei?

From an old movie about one mean sister and one weak sister...mean sister was approaching weak sister with a lighted match threatening to set fire to her nightgown

Wouldn't be "A Streetcar Named Desire" by any chance...

Actually I just found out that the movie is most likely "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080120061213AAGpisT&kid=FpcuWzHoVTVWxAhq24T54WeglLGicLts3K3gfRbDxQ.FxEKEkRtR&s=comm&date=2008-02-19+16%3A57%3A31&.crumb=

I would have guessed "Streetcar" too, because of the name Stella, but your description sounds more "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

What is in your attic that you can't bring yourself to throw away?

Why do you keep it?

Mine is an old Lana Turner style penoir and nightgown set from the middle of an earlier century. I keep it because they don't make them like that any more, and I might need it again some day!

Boxes of STUFF that my kids and grandkids made. Why is it that most of that stuff cost very little to make, has no resale value, is not even useful sometimes, but for some reason you just can't part with it? My kids say "MOM JUST THROW THAT STUFF OUT"! I tell them just wait! Some day you will you understand.....lol..Most of keep STUFF just because.....It might be useful again...we will get it fixed...you never know when it might come in handy...etc..and why does it seem that as soon as you get rid of something that you thought was useless or junk you suddenly find a use for it or wished you had kept it!..lol. When I was a child it seemed like the attic in my grandparents house held so many "treasures" that would make all the toy stores seem pale by comparison.!

Many things I cannot throw away. But to name one in particular it would be an old lamp we had at home when I was growing up. I move it arouind and dust the shade but cannot bear to part with it. That is only one of several items lol.

A bunch of bats and I keep them because if I threw THEM out there wouldn't be ANYTHING upstairs...

Seriously

A fishing rod passed on to me by my Grandad.

I keep it because it reminds me of some really good times spent fishing with him and my Nanny

Old wooden puzzles from the fifties and board games.

My ex husband.....lol

Boxes of old photographs that were my grandmothers. Most of them are black and white and would have been taken with one of the old Brownie cameras. None of them are dated and I don't know who most of the people are in them, but throwing them away feels like throwing away part of history.

I always said I would never be like that with any pictures I took and each and everyone is dated with the names of those in the picture plus where the picture was taken and the occasion.

Grammar school pictures, 35 year old report cards and decorations made by my children. I keep them because when they gave them to me I always thought how special they were. Now they are more than special, they are precious.

Christmas ornaments my children made for me when they were little.

Not in my attic, but in my basement and bedroom. I saved every paper my daughter ever brought home from school. I can't bear to part with them! She's going to be 28 years old, so you know I've had them for a LONG TIME!! I also have all the notes she wrote to me when she was little. Some of them I carry in my wallet, although they are pretty well tattered, they touch my heart every time I look at them.

I also have a boxful of letters and notes my husband wrote to me while we were dating and we've been married for almost 34 years.

The art work of my son and the prom dress I wore in high school. my husband uniform and metals from when he was in the air force

I have a beautiful set of silk sheets bought for the honeymoon. Never used them since because they slide off the bed and cause clammy, sweaty. A 1969 tunic shirt, a buckskin jacket with the fringe on it. A bell signed and presented by the Mayor of Philadelphia while traveling with the Holiday Inn Messengers in the 60's. A cheap slick surface Indian picture( huge) given to me by my son for Christmas when he 11 .Metal roller skates with the key.

A huge black bag (or two) stuffed with Teddy Ruxpin and tapes, Fieival Mouse, Country Bear, Wuzzles, Poppins and Cabbage patch. That same 26 yr old son wants to keep them. Go Figure?

This is a great question! have a star!

I have nothing in the attic. My Kids, niece and nephew helped me clean it out, they took what they wanted, what was left went to The Salvation Army.

classic speakers like the Bose 301 Series 1, the Boston Acoustics 100, EPI 100... I mean, I have plenty of speakers but just can't seem to let those sweeties go

I actually have an original Dale Evans cow girl outfit. I was thrilled to get it for my birthday one year and still remember how much fun I had playing in it.

We have lots of clothes and toys. We keep it because we are too lazy to donate.. I keep the clothes because sometimes I'll rummage through them and find a shirt I'll start to wear now but not back then. There is lots of other random things too, but until we run out of space we will keep on piling!

Some clothes that I hope to wear, if not this summer, next summer, or maybe the summer after that, or the next one. See what I mean?

How is fashion important to world history?

I am doing a project on ancient Asian fashions. We have to include how fashion is important to world history and how it affected world history. Any other information on fashion and how it changed in ancient Asia ( 1000 BCE to 1600 ACE) would also be helpful. (This is a high school class.) Thank you!

It's relatively unimportant to history. However, since you have to pretend that it is, just discuss the differences between classes' clothing, the difference of religious leaders clothing, and the changes seen in mens clothing versus women's clothing. Research various cultures, and maybe you point out unique clothing like in Korea they have the traditional han bok for various customs.

Well I think fashion is very important because it describes you. It shows people who you are. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20081028144935AAv52fR&kid=JZxWLEv1DzWuNlu81H.k&s=comm&date=2008-12-11+13%3A41%3A40&.crumb=

Fashion in history is important because certain clothes mean different things. From Roman times to acient Egypt to modern day even!!! Fashoin is used to establish social class, royalty, and so on. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20081028144935AAv52fR&kid=IqdkDGH6DXI091ECtbWu&s=comm&date=2009-01-06+10%3A33%3A10&.crumb=

Hmmm...how fashion affects world history is hard to explain, but it's better to think about it as how social history is reflected through fashion.

Think of it as this way. When I did a project on Victorian era fashion, I included the social history part by introducing the social classes and explained how each class dressed and behaved. Then I went on with what they (men, women, and children) wore throughout Queen Victoria's reign.

You can learn from world history, about what the civilisations thought of different things at the time. You can also find out what the different classes thought were attractive and their mindset on certain issues. It affected world history because people judged people. If you weren't fashionable at the time, people would not like you as much. Also it accepts people into ceratin groups in society.

Views on people and how we use appearences to differenciate authoritive figures etc from one another and other people using stereotypical views. However through history as time has past and social views have changed these distinctive borders and distorted due to the fact that the world interchanges its appearances with different mediums of fashion, apart from the Queen attending a royal conference etc, what would she wear and how would that divide her from the rest?...it doesnt because anyone can now wear a suit or jeans or hoodys and although we still have stereotypical views based on clothes the whole concept has become disullusioned through time because of the change in social views etc

fashion is very important in history because some of the most historic people looked at fashion like a different world for them. fashion explains people, and tells about them. 4 some people, fashion is the only thing that they can make thier own.but for some people, fashion is important to history, for some people it isnt, you decide

today in france alot of fashion designers are asian so they integrate asian fashions into todays stuff

How do I fix holes in cloth blinds?

We got cloth blinds and sent them to be hemmed. The hemming job wasn't good. We had to take the hem out and just cut them. Now the holes from the hem are large and look tacky. How can we fix it?

First, try to take a needle or straight pin and manually try to push the treads of the weave of the cloth closed. Poke around at it and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, you can take the cloth you cut off and try to cover it from behind. You can buy stitch witchery at the fabric store or in the fabric dept of Walmart. Stitch witchery is iron on hemming tape. You can try ironing on new cloth from behind. If you think that won't work or the cloth cannot be ironed, another option would be to buy some ribbon or fancy trim from the fabric store and hand sew it on across the holes.
